TIP completes successful 2011 seminar series

17 Aug

The 2011 Teachers Institute seminar series concluded with 48 teachers successfully creating innovative curriculum units that they will implement in the coming school year.

The five seminars completed their last formal seminar sessions on May 10, beginning a writing period during which TIP Teacher Fellows honed the third and final drafts of their researched units. The final versions were handed in by late June.

On May 31, all participants gathered for a plenary session in the Franklin Room of Houston Hall to celebrate and mark the end of the seminars and the upcoming end of the school year. After refreshments, a Fellow representative from each seminar addressed the group and shared highlights and overviews of their recent TIP experience. This was accomplished with insights, humor, touching moments and even a musical performance that backed recited verse.

Teachers representing each seminar were:

  • Jessica Shupik for Children’s Literature
  • Troy Holiday for Marcellus Shale and Pennsylvania
  • Brian Cohen for Math Concepts in the Classroom: Probability
  • John Pickersgill for The Middle East Through the Eyes of Women
  • Frank Machos and Sydney Coffin for Who Are Those People and Why Are They Listening to That Music?

All completed units will be posted for sharing and reference on this website by early fall. Successful teacher participants receive Act-48 credits and a stipend award.

TIP is very proud of the long hours and fine efforts invested by our teacher participants. They have worked hard to obtained new content knowledge and apply it to planning objectives and engaging lesson plan activities for their students at all levels.
